Wolf Pack Cross Country team announces 2013 schedule

(New Orleans, La.) Loyola University New Orleans head men’s and women’s cross country coach Andy Canegitta has announced the schedule for the 2013 cross country season.

The Wolf Pack will kick off the season hosting the Loyola Wolf Pack Invitational at Lafreniere Park on September 7th at 8:00 am in Metairie, Louisiana. This will be a 5K meet for both the men and women. It will be the only 5K meet of the season for the men. Jonathan Malbrue was one of three top 20 finishers for Loyola as they took home fifth place in the 2012 version of the meet. The women took sixth place as Denise Powell topped the Wolf Pack with a time of 22:47.

The Pack will then head to Baton Rouge, Louisiana, to participate in the LSU Invitational on September 21st. The men will open their 8K slate at Highland Road Park while the women have their first of two 6K races.

After a two week break for training, the Loyola distance runners travel to Clinton, Mississippi for the Watson Ford Invitational. The women will conclude their 6K schedule. Last year, the Wolf Pack raced at the same course in Clinton at the Choctaw Open. Malbrue completed the race five seconds behind Paul Freese as both finished in the top 25 in the race on the men’s side. Annie Hills was the top Wolf Pack finisher on the women’s side as she finished in 37th place with a 5K time of 20:31.

The Wolf Pack will then have a two week break in competition before making their first ever appearance in the Crimson Classic on October 18th. The Classic will be hosted by the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa, Alabama.

Both the men’s and women’s cross country teams will close out their regular season the next weekend with a trip to Bluffton, South Carolina, for the Sand Shark Invitational on October 18th. Last season Freese posted the fifth fastest 8K time in school history at 26:37 at the Sand Shark Invitational. Hills set the Loyola women’s record for the 5K with a time of 19:16 on the women’s side.

Afterwards the Wolf Pack will head to the SSAC Championship meet which will be held at Choctaw Trails in Clinton, Mississippi on November 9th. This will be the second race of the season at Choctaw Trails, following the October 4th Watson Ford Invitational. Qualifiers for the NAIA National Championships will travel to Lawrence, Kansas, for the meet held on November 23rd.
